Microdosing and Creativity: Hype or Research Finding?
Microdosing — taking sub-perceptual doses of psychoactive substances — has been touted as a creativity booster for years, especially in the tech scene. But what does the research actually say? Is the creativity hype justified, or are we caught up in a collective placebo effect? Honest answer: it's more complicated than either side claims.
I'm Milo, and over the past few years I've read hundreds of community reports, pored over studies, and spoken with researchers from our community. Today I'm sharing with you what we actually know — and what we don't.

The Silicon Valley Myth: How Microdosing Became a Trend
Remember 2015? An article in "Rolling Stone" made the rounds: "How LSD Microdosing Became the Hot New Business Trip." Suddenly microdosing was everywhere. Tech entrepreneurs in San Francisco spoke openly about how sub-perceptual doses helped them code. Steve Jobs had famously called LSD one of the most important experiences of his life. The narrative was born: microdosing makes you creative, productive, successful.
But — and this is an important question — was that based on research or anecdotes?
According to an analysis of Google Trends data, the search volume for "microdosing" increased by over 900% between 2015 and 2023. That's impressive — but popularity is not proof of efficacy. So let's look at the data.
What Does the Research Really Say? The Key Studies
Prochazkova et al. (2018): Divergent Thinking
The Leiden University study is one of the most cited works on microdosing and creativity. 38 participants at a microdosing event in the Netherlands were tested before and after taking a microdose.
Results:
- Divergent thinking (ideation, brainstorming) was significantly improved
- Convergent thinking (analytical problem-solving) was also slightly improved
- Participants showed greater fluency, flexibility, and originality
However: The study had no control group and no placebo. Participants knew they were taking a microdose. This is methodologically problematic — and the researchers themselves pointed this out.
Polito & Stevenson (2019): The Big Meta-Analysis
Vince Polito and Paul Stevenson from Macquarie University systematically analyzed the available literature. Their findings from a longitudinal study with 98 microdosers over 6 weeks:
- Microdosing days showed increased concentration and productivity (self-reported)
- Creativity was rated as "slightly improved"
- Mindfulness and well-being increased significantly
- Neuroticism decreased over the study period
Important: the authors emphasized that expectancy effects could play a major role. In a later analysis, they estimated the placebo component at a minimum of 30-50%.
Szigeti et al. (2021): The Placebo Bombshell
The arguably most methodologically rigorous study on the topic came from Imperial College London. Balazs Szigeti and his team conducted a self-blinded study with 191 participants. The ingenious design: participants prepared their own placebo and microdosing capsules without knowing which they took on any given day.
The result that shook the community:
- Both microdosing and placebo improved well-being and creativity
- There was no statistically significant difference between the groups
- The researchers concluded: "The benefits of microdosing can be explained by the placebo effect"
Is that the final word? Not quite. The study had limitations: uncontrolled dosing, self-blinding is imperfect, and the substances used were not standardized. But it carries an important message: we need to be more careful with causal claims.
Anderson et al. (2019): Personality and Creativity
Thomas Anderson from the University of Toronto studied 909 microdosers and compared them with 180 non-microdosers. The findings: microdosers reported higher scores in wisdom, openness, and creativity — but also higher scores in neuroticism. However, it was not a controlled study.

What do we actually know? Let me be radically honest:
What supports a creativity effect:
- Consistent community reports spanning years (thousands of reports)
- Initial placebo-controlled studies show trends (even if not always significant)

What speaks against it (or at least calls for caution):
- Placebo effect could explain a large portion
- Methodologically rigorous studies are rare
- Self-reports are notoriously unreliable
- Publication bias: positive results are more likely to be published
My personal assessment: the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle. Microdosing may promote creativity — but the effect is likely more subtle than the hype suggests, and part of it could indeed be attributable to expectancy effects.
5 Community Reports: Creativity in Daily Life
Our research community has shared numerous reports with us. Here are five that show different perspectives — unfiltered and honest.
Report 1: "The Designer" — Lara, 32, UX Designer
"I tried the [Fadiman Protocol](https://lsd-derivate.com/fadiman-protokoll) for three months. On microdosing days, brainstorming came easier — not dramatically, but noticeably. I felt like I dismissed ideas less quickly and was more open to unconventional solutions. My best designs during that period, however, actually emerged on off-days. Maybe a sustainability effect? "I had hoped microdosing would help me code. Honest assessment after six months: for creative problem-solving (architecture, new features) yes, slightly positive. For the actual coding (syntax, debugging) rather neutral to slightly negative — I was sometimes TOO divergent in my thinking and saw too many possibilities instead of just implementing the pragmatic solution."
Creativity effect: Context-dependent — good for big picture, tricky for detail work
Report 4: "The Author" — Nina, 41, Non-Fiction Writer
"Microdosing didn't solve my writer's block — that was an illusion I told myself for three weeks. What it ACTUALLY did: it helped me slip into flow more easily in the morning. The hurdle to get started was lower. The quality of my output? Same as usual. But quantity was higher because I procrastinated less."
Creativity effect: Less creativity, more productivity/anti-procrastination
Report 5: "The Entrepreneur" — Jan, 45, E-Commerce Founder
"I'm the type who tracks everything. Revenue, meetings, ideas per day. My n=1 experiment over 90 days: on microdosing days, I noted an average of 4.2 business ideas (vs. 2.8 on off-days). Of those, 1.1 were 'viable' after later evaluation (vs. 0.9 on off-days). So: more ideas, marginally more good ideas. Cost-benefit? Hard to say. I'm continuing anyway."
Creativity effect: Quantitatively measurable, qualitatively marginal
Integrating Microdosing into Your Work Routine: Practical Tips
If you'd like to explore microdosing and creativity for yourself, here are some considerations that our community has found helpful.
The Fadiman Protocol: Ideal for Creativity Research
The [Fadiman Protocol](https://lsd-derivate.com/fadiman-protokoll) — named after James Fadiman, the "father of microdosing" — is the most widely used schedule:
- Day 1: Microdose
- Day 2: Transition day (observe aftereffects)
- Day 3: Off-day (baseline)
- Repeat
Why this particular protocol for creativity? The off-days allow you to compare your output with and without a microdose. Many of our community members report that the most creative moments actually happen on the transition day (Day 2) — a so-called "afterglow effect."
Timing in Your Work Day

- Dose in the morning: Most report that early dosing (before 10 AM) works better
- Schedule creative work for the morning: The first 4-6 hours seem to be the most creative window

What You Should NOT Expect
I need to be honest here — and this matters to me because our research community is built on honesty:
Microdosing Is Not a Creativity Cheat Code
You won't suddenly become the next Steve Jobs. If you weren't doing creative work before, microdosing won't change that. It may slightly amplify existing creative abilities — it doesn't create new ones.
The Effect Is Subtle
If you feel a dramatic effect, you're probably no longer dosing "micro." Sub-perceptual means: below the threshold of awareness. The effect on creativity — if present — tends to show up in retrospective analysis rather than in real time.
Creativity Needs More Than Neurochemistry
Research consistently shows: creativity emerges from the interplay of knowledge, practice, environment, and mental state. A substance can at best slightly influence one of these factors. The 10,000-hour rule still applies — with or without microdosing.
Set and Setting Apply Here Too
Even with microdosing, environment plays a role. A creativity-promoting setting (quiet workspace, inspiring materials, open calendar) may be just as effective as the microdose itself.
Conclusion: Hype or Research Finding?
The most honest answer: both. There is a real hype that has inflated expectations. And there are initial research findings that point to a subtle effect — which, however, may be partially explained by placebo effects.
